Happiest of birthdays to the keyboard wizard Joel Cummins!!! Old man Joel is now 41 years of age! We love you Joel! Joel Joel Joel! Here’s to another amazing year of music and adventure!
According to Wikipedia:
Joel Nathan Cummins (born January 12, 1975, in La Grange, Illinois) is an American musician, and founding member/keyboardist for progressive rock band Umphrey’s McGee.
Cummins tours full-time with Umphrey’s McGee, playing a range of shows each year, including sold-out performances at New York’s Beacon Theater, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater and The Wiltern in Los Angeles. The group also regularly performs American festivals such as Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Electric Forest & Summer Camp Music Festival. International appearances have included Jam in the Dam in Amsterdam, Byron Bay Blues Fest in Australia and Fuji Rock Fest in Japan.
Cummins, along with Brendan Bayliss, Mike Mirro and Ryan Stasik, formed the band in December 1997. Cummins and Mirro were members of University of Notre Dame band Stomper Bob, which split up around the same time as another local band, Tashi Station (which included Bayliss and Stasik).
Cummins began studying classical piano more than 25 years ago and, along with several keyboards, performs with a grand piano at Umphrey’s McGee concerts.
In 1995, he released a solo piano album, Suspended in Time: An Epic, featuring originals such as the future Umphrey’s McGee classic Orfeo and covers such as Phish’s Magilla.
In 2001, Cummins released an electronic keyboard-based album, Common Sense, which featured Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger on drums for most tracks. The band would later use two of the tracks, The Triple Wide and In Violation of Yes, in their concert repertoire.
In addition to playing in Umphrey’s McGee, Cummins writes and plays with a number of other bands. He is a member of progressive-rock tinged OHMphrey along with Chris Poland (Megadeth) and two members of Umphrey’s McGee. Joel is a member of Digital Tape Machine, a more electronic Chicago-based group. Cummins also performs with the improvisational groups The Everyone Orchestra, Kick the McGee, North Indiana All Stars and Banyan, with Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Nels Cline (Wilco) and Mike Watt (Minutemen, Firehose, Stooges). He has also recently been featured on several occasions as a guest keyboardist for Indiana-based jamtronica group Cosby Sweater.
He has also collaborated with artists such as Huey Lewis, Joshua Redman, Mavis Staples, Phil Lesh, Buddy Guy, Skrillex, Robby Krieger of The Doors, Damian Marley, Warpaint, Thundercat, ASAP Ferg, Koko Taylor, Sinéad O’Connor, Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, Warren Haynes, Bob Weir, Les Claypool, John Oates, Big Light, Adrian Belew, Ray White & Lee Oskar.
Cummins married Dasha Davis in May 2010 and the couple resides in Los Angeles.

or this cover of Floyd’s Wish You Were Here as captured by Brianna Kelly
or how about user ‘Lossless’s grab of ITK from 2008?
All we’re saying is, if you’re going tonight, you’re going to have a damn good time! What are some of your favorite J&B Holiday show memories from years past?
This week, without warning, Denver’s 1up Colfax announced that it would stop hosting live music events in its space, turning instead to emphasize the traditional barcade experience that has long set it aside from other Beer Halls in Denver. Umphreaks have looked on 1up Colfax as a small but active hub of Umphrey’s related events – from Umphrey’s McGee hosting the first 1up show in December 2013, to the many Joel and Kris superjam appearances which assured improvisational mastery in a easy-to-access environment. It appeared as though some umphcoming Umphrey’s related shows in the near-future would be certainly cancelled.
Enter: Quixote’s True Blue on 13th.
The amazing team at MusicMarauders quickly pivoted to the classic Denver venue, allowing for the amazing Roosevelt Collier superjam to move forward this upcoming weekend. Joel Cummins, beloved keyboard magician extraordinaire, will join colleagues Roosevelt Collier (slide guitar, The Lee Boys), Billy Nershi (guitar, The String Cheese Incident), Matt Lapham (bass, Shak Nasti) and Dave Watts (dummer, The Motet). Roosevelt always assembles an amazing team for a thorough and fun improvisational “get down” and with Joel in the mix, this will most assuredly be one of the best on-the-fly jams assembled by the good “Doctor”.
The boys will be in Boulder the night before at the Fox Theatre (sans Dave Watts, but sub-in Dominic Lalli & Jeremy Salken, plus opener Tom Hamilton’s American Babies). To purchase Tickets For 11.19, gotot www.foxtheatre.com
To Purchase Tickets For the Quixotes shows the next two nights, 11.20 & 11.21, goto www.quixotes.com
He’s a nice Soundcloud of a previous Roosevelt Collier “Get Down”, just to give a sample!
Woah – busy Monday already! Let’s run down the latest good shit that’s come our way!
Jeff Austin & Brendan Bayliss To Revive 30db Project
30db, Bayliss and Jeff Austin’s emobluegrass side project, has announced two dates at the Tonic Room in December. More news from the homies at Jambase here: http://www.jambase.com/Articles/126923/Jeff-Austin-and-Brendan-Bayliss-To-Revive-30db-Project

Joel Cummins has revealed through his twitter that Umphrey’s McGee will be back in Wisconsin at the Orpheum Theater in Madison, January 28th and 29th, leading into the Kalamazoo ragedown on January 30th. Info is supposedly coming November 11th.
Lastly, no Umphrey’s McGee shows until December 3rd, 2015 as we head out and get tropical at Dominican Holidaze. Until then, several members have superjams and sideprojects planned across the country, with Joel playing a two night run in Indianapolis with Turbo Suit late this month, and Kris has a charity jam going on in California. Jake and Brendan acoustic Christmas at the Park West about 40 days out or so!
Would really love to Reel to Reall but can’t afford the madness? 1up Colfax has announced a January 1st opportunity for those who can’t afford R2R and don’t want to head down US36 to Broomfield. Behold, FADERUNNER! The mighty Joel Cummins of our beloved Umphrey’s McGee joins forces with an allstar superjam lineup: DJ extraordinaire Wyllys of the NY Hustle Esemble, keys in your face Todd Stoops of RAQ, fire fingers Marcus Rezak of Digital Tape Machine & Justin Ehmer drum downpour from DYNOHUNTER. Woodamn, should be a great alternative for those who thought they had to take it easy on the first.
When? January 1 at The 1up – Colfax in Denver, CO, post Umphrey’s McGee!
Tickets? Tickets go on-sale this Friday at 10:00 AM at www.the-1up.com/listing!
